Refusing SEO Work?

All 5 clients want to rank 1st page of google for the same key phrase

How far can you really go? I’m sure any SEO company or SEO Consultant can relate to this, in fact I suspect this is a fear that many SEO companies will not admit or discuss openly about.

But let’s be realistic here, if you have a client that wants to be on the 1st page of google for the keyphrase ” Bangkok Property “, and than the next 4 clients or so that you are also doing SEO work for are also bidding for this term, your SEO task becomes more challenging. (I have been reasonable fortunate with clients of mine that are in slightly different areas of expertise in particular Hua Hin Real Estate ).

Respectively you have 10 spots in google for the same keyphrase before you will end up on the 2nd page. So this leaves you room with 5 clients and 5 spots to move around slightly on the 1st page give and take and due to google’s daily algorithms.

5 Most Common Refusal Work and Ways around this:

  1. Clients Bidding for Same Key phrases – (Don’t lock yourself, suggest that they can be on the the 1st page but because your previous clients have bided for the same phrases, they may as a result appear on the 2nd page from time to time.)
  2. Duplicated Websites – Many SEO companies refuse SEO work if the client wants to market all of their sites that are totally the same (Ways around that are setting up a parked domain to the site they wish to duplicate)
  3. Static Vs Dynamic Websites – Some SEO’s prefer to work on Static Sites, as other SEO’s prefer to work on Dynamic, depending which one you are used to, working on any different can be a daunting task, as meta keywords and description and page text etc. to adjust are set differently.
    (A) Static (Good old find and replace works wonders) ,
    (B) Dynamic (Editing the database file keywords after exporting tables can also be a quick resolution)
  4. Search Engine Friendly Url’s – If your client has old indexed pages such as www.mywebsite.com/mywebpage?=123 and now requires SEO friendly Url’s but does not want his old indexed files to be deleted. (You could make those old pages still indexed but look and feel slightly different.)
  5. Website Designed in Flash – If the website was purely designed in flash (swf) and are no hard coded html files or similar of that matter uploaded their could be an issue of re-designing the site from scratch to base itself around being SEO friendly.

So the big question is to all SEO companies out there, will you refuse SEO work if this becomes the case? Or will you work around the common issues and tasks to better take care of your clients needs!

A bit longer reply than the one at Sphinn..

Marketing companies that specialize in a specific vertical are incredibly common.. The build their portfolios and set their rates by targeting a specific vertical market and becoming the best there is at that market.. And no one gives that a second thought..

Would a billboard company only take ads from one jewelry company?? Or as many as they can get?? What about radio, tv, major companies like Crispin Porter + Bogusky have no problem with marketing competing companies.. By becoming a specialist you can better serve your clients.. And you can charge more for your services..

Now, if someone wanted an exclusive, that can be arranged, for a fee.. You wouldn’t give away a no-compete for free would you??

Beside all that, SEOs don’t rank wesbites.. Search engines do..

Hi Feydakin, very well said. There is no reason why if you go to the extra level you cannot set an additional fee, correct!

I don’t think an SEO company should ever say that they will get 1st place or 2nd place. But then again, there isn’t much else to measure it by.

Maybe they should bid for first place, and the remaining should bid for second, and so on, and so on.

Surely the aim of a service is to do the best possible job one can for each client. By effectively working with directly competing clients one cannot achieve the same level of success equally for each client.
Personally, if I hired an SEOer and discovered they were not working at maximum effectiveness because the work they did for me was being diluted by work for my competition (in the SERPs), I’d not be best pleased – and he’d have one less client to worry about cramming into the top SERPs.

  9. admin says:

Hi ndixon, in fact this is the very pitfall which either makes it or breaks it and your right, concentrating on each client to the maximum potential is the key, but this does not change the fact you have the right to call the shots when taking on the job just as much as the client has the call on deciding whether this is the right thing for them to do! As what’s good for the goose has to be good for the gander!

    Thank you
