Who Is John Chow?

John Chow for those of you who don’t know is one of the biggest affiliate marketing celebrities out there today, and is one of my biggest mentors for this industry. I have followed his blog posts daily for the past couple of years, but recently decided to take a challenge into becoming listed as a top commentator on his site.

So what did I have to do in order to be a top commentator?

Just regularly comment on his blog, that is all! Over time, you will gain more comments, which will then if you have made enough be listed as one of his top commentators on the home page / site wide of his website.

What are the benefits of being a top commentator?

There are numerous benefits, by being a commentator on any site, you build community with other readers and its almost the same way as networking, other readers get to know you and they then follow what you do and learn from you as well. Of course you do not comment purely for this purpose, but it is an added bonus if someone else follows you to your own site.

The right & wrong reasons to comment on other blogs

People tend to comment if your site is dofollow but in my opinion this is not the right way to look at things. Really you want to build traffic and relationship for the long term, so if you happen to have a link from a site that is nofollow, and people like you, then they will naturally interview you, do reviews about your site and all this other great stuff which lead to real traffic, so over time if you keep persistent and active with others, you will get loads of natural one way links both dofollow and nofollow.

Taking action

Readers tend to get lazy and usually only a small majority of readers will ever comment on a blog even if they have been a regular reader, but if you do make an effort, like I was saying it leads to more opportunity, making friends and of course making money!

    Wow Dan!

Congratulations! Looks like you're getting addicted there with John Chow's topics. I also like John Chow a lot and he's one of my idols on making money online, so I am happy to be one of John Chow's trusted commentators even I'm not yet on the top list.

    Cheers!

    Jeff

How does it make you one of the trusted commentators ? :)

Well done Dan! I am sure John is very grateful for all the spider food you have given him for free.

Haha, hey but you know what, he deserves it! Everyone is quick to judge and say these guys attract suckers, but unfortunately that is the wrong attitude! In order to succeed you need role models and people to look up to, people who think they can be a success without leaching on to others, are only fooling themselves! It's all about networking! :)

    Very good said, Daniel.

Being a top commentator on a big blog is not always good, because sometimes people see you as a spammer.

    Daniel Lew Reply:

Not if your comments have good insight and are helpful to others and are on topic. Lol, and this came from someone that just commented 4 comments on my blog in a matter of 5 mins! :) I was about to put you in my spam folder :)

    Alex Dumitru Reply:

I've discovered your blog yesterday so there were a lot of articles I could comment too. Anyway I didn't say you are a spammer, just that some might consider you so. Anyway, congrats, I guess you get some traffic from there + the link juice :)

I think commenting on other people"s blogs has more benefit if you can entice them to reciprocate.

In doing so, you are not only building a network as Dan has pointed out, but you are also getting free content.

Akismet usually sorts out the spammers and those it misses you can sort out yourself if you configure your blog to threaded comments and only approve comments you want to appear.

One of the things I love about blogging is meeting and being introduced to other people.

I'm also an Aussie and I don't think I've been hiding under a rock (although we do boast the biggest) but I thought I'd come across most of the top affiliate marketers out there, yet until I came across Dan in the Warriors forum, I haven't come across John or Dan before.

Guess I'd better take a look!

    Hey Sean,

Great to have you on here and another Aussie indeed! :)

That's very true. Returning visitors and loyal readers are very important.

Very good point about dofollow and nofollow, and I'd like to add to it. Having a mixture of nofollow and dofollow links is natural. Having an overwhelming majority of dofollow links is not natural, it looks like a link campaign. If the search engines, now or in the future, determine your linkage is unnatural, there's a very good chance those links will be devalued.

Ask yourself what you'd do if you were the search engines and you were trying to prevent others from gaming the system. To ensure your link campaign has lasting value, it must look natural. Even if the search engines don't detect that pattern now, they sooner or later probably will. Plan for the long haul if you want to succeed.

One other point, Google's own Matt Cutts has said Google follows nofollow links. They don't give them as much weight as dofollow, but some link juice is transferred. I don't recall if I read that on his blog or saw it on Google's YouTube channel, but it's out there.

    Hi Jane,

Yes indeed! And again this is why I pointed out that those who only concentrate on dofollow are doing it wrong! ;)
