Why you should keep focused one website, not many?
If you have heard before that building niche sites that generate a passive income is the way to make money online, don’t believe the hype that this is the most practical approach, particularly if you are looking at this on a long term business scale, although it sounds great in theory, there is definitely plenty of down sides and you should not be surprised if all your hard work hasn’t gone to plan.

In Theory
It’s easy to lose focus and not be distracted into buying domain names, especially domains with keyword matches so many so called gurus try to push you. There is a certain amount of people out there in the industry that keep pushing the idea of:- if you really want to make money you have to build niche sites but you know what, even though you can, just be careful you don’t lose valuable time and money going down these areas especially if you are fairly new on the internet affiliate marketing game.
I am not saying its not a good idea to do niche sites to bring in an extra income, I also have a range of niche sites that make me money, but what I do recommend is you still maintain focus on your main site which might be your own business or personal blog or the site that makes the most money or traffic because although creating niche sites and ranking well in the search engines is all fine and dandy, your still really not building a name and a brand for yourself.
Be Practical
This is why I keep up regular posts on danlew.com and try and post as much quality content as I possibly can as I want to be able to bring in a good steady readership and subscribers and of course sales through affiliate commissions on products I promote both directly and indirectly, especially ones that I have tested myself and find work well because after all this is what I do.
I am an Internet Marketer and like to try out different programs and courses in order to keep up to date with the best of the best and recommend things that work for me and the best advice I can give including help to others. I like to give my honest opinion on what works and what doesn’t because believe me I know the frustrations for anyone else who has struggled to make a living online before I’m sure you have probably been burnt before this is the exact reason why I started danlew.com in the first place to give you insight as to what I go through and what makes you successful online.
I also established GSEO.net for the same reason to build a community and to give everyone who is either new or been around for a while a place where they can grow further and still keep focused. It is one thing building either a brand for yourself and concentrating on one site and it is another focusing on niche sites, but sooner or later there will come a time you need someone to hold your hand and grow your online business the best you can with the support of others, this is why I also recommend SEO outsourcing which I have covered before.
I also want to mention the importance of sticking to building 1 website or blog and bringing as much traffic as possible without any distractions because its very easy especially with an Entrepreneurs mindset to go from one thing to the next without actually sticking to one thing, I call this weaving. This is what made me think of the idea of creating Keyword Winner because just from having one blog and continually posting in the search engine friendly way enables you to rank not only for your home page which most gurus try and sell you on with domain keyword match buying, but all other hundreds or thousands of inside pages can reach the first page and guess what?
You don’t need to build thousands of backlinks for every website, instead you build backlinks for one site and all your other posts that you create awesome content for naturally will get good rankings provided you optimize them as well and the best part is you will not get distracted and have to keep track of all the sites you have created.
Moral of the story
Keep focused, if your starting out and have just one year or less experience online stick to your main site or blog. No need to start going on a tangent and registering loads of domains to build niche sites, at least until your main blog is getting good traffic you can always use that as your base and post links to your other niche sites within your content, you can go that step further and build niche sites after you are confident and bringing in a steady flow of traffic first.
Once you have 1 year or more experience online you may even still be finding your way around on what products to promote with your niche sites, so it is really a whole big ball game, just slowly get your feet wet first and take things from there but always remember who your big site and brand is and the potential of how your big site can drive traffic and authority to anything else you want from there on.
Don’t believe the hype in building niche sites, there is so much competition out there and unless you have found gold mine niches that you can rank well for and have affiliate products to promote you will lose time and money, although if you do go down this track don’t be one of the many bloggers or website owners that give up because you didn’t have a proper plan on creating niche sites, be sure to join a site like GSEO.net to get the best advice possible.
Hope you enjoyed this post and am very eager to get feedback and comments regarding this topic.

I am glad you said 2012 because that is a good time frame to set yourself to work towards, now you just need to concentrate on no.1 in the meantime, as far as recommendations are concerned I would like to suggest GSEO.net community we will hold your hand in the process of creating profitable niche sites
I tell people to focus 80% of your time on your site and 20% on a niche site so you can grow both at a commonsense rate.

Yes I agree with that ratio, as long as they already have their main site pulling in a healthy traffic flow and has good authority and is generating some sales then I think it is ok to concentrate on niche sites on the side.
Dan,
Great post! This really is excellent advice. While I have 100+ website, 60+% of my revenue comes from my top site.
I do have the niche site bug, but have re-focused my energy in 2011 so I spend no more than 30% of my time on my niche sites with the rest focused on my top site or two (and my blog).
All the best,
Ian

Ian, I think someone as experienced as yourself in the field is nothing wrong with spending a good percentage of your time on niche sites because you know so much about it and have good success with it already
Hi Dan, great advice. I was googling internet to find just the answer to this very question. I had worked my way through dozens of training products, acquired considerable volume of information and knowledge but the "last step" for me to make decision on was just this: whether to go for one main website with multiple products on it or to build dozens of various niche minisites. So I totally agree with what you are suggesting here. Thanks a lot really for great insights.
I thoroughly enjoy your blog and take advice regularly from it, even recommend it on my blog to others just starting out.
